Not necessarily easier, but definitely much, much better performing.
If I understand correctly, his latest work with Excel entails doing
everything with RPG (not calling Java at all).

As such, he's had to build it largely from scratch. I would imagine
it was harder to build pure RPG Excel file handling logic than to wrap
Java calls with RPG. But once built, I'm sure it was/is as easy or
easier to use than his POI wrappers.
