HMC upgraded to 8820 MH01454 ; MH01486.
This really took some work and long.
Downloading all the iso , SP, fixes - about 4 hours.
6 HMC reboots over the course, each about 1/2 hour
I'd still like to confirm if could have done this without burning either the 779 or 882 base iso to DVD-R.
IBM HMC support is stating this is still required for code updates, on the restart, HMC will boot from DVD and process the code update.
SP, firmware are fine from USB.
I've read posts that others have done this without burning iso to DVD
I do see in the tech doc, an option Download direct from IBM to HMC, I inquired about this, not recommended.
I do see another option - Optional: Using a local server
Is this possibly what others are referring to?
This option I believe requires restricted shell access via Putty or other client.
1. Use FTP to do a binary download of the upgrade files from the IBM server to a directory on a local FTP server:
IBM Server: ftp.software.ibm.com/software/server/hmc/network/v7790
Files: (if you use the mget command, be aware that bzImage does not have a file extension)
bzImage
disk1.img
disk2.img
disk3.img
hmcnetworkfiles.sum
initrd.gz
2. Perform the upgrade as described above. However, in Step 7, modify the getupgfiles command to point to your local FTP server. For example:
getupgfiles -h myserver -u myuserid --passwd mypassword -d /mydirectory

HMC upgrade from 7.7.7.0 to 7.7.7.9 using DVD R complete.
IBM is stating I can use USB for SP, Firmware, and backups.
But still insisting the upgrades must be done from DVD R, (iso needs to be burned to a DVD)
Downloading SP1 and 8820.

It's in the documentation somewhere. I know that remote updates/upgrades of the HMC work too although I have not done a remote upgrade yet.
Not it a position to look it up myself right now.

How and where do I do that?
Is there a doc or link?

Not true, do it all the time.
The Flash drive does need to be set up as a bootable device.

Rob,
Did a flash drive work for HMC code upgrade. I'm being told that HMC will only boot from the DVD-ram, can't do the upgrade via flash drive.

I've used about all those options.
With my new HMC's I started out with new DVDs. Major upgrades I use flash drives. For service packs and whatnot I've done via ftp directly from the HMC.

Rob,
Thanks for links.
I'm planning on going to 8.8.2.0 SP1.
However, this will need to be a two step.
7.7.7.0 to 7.7.7.9 SP 1
7.7.7.9 SP1 to 8.8.2.0 SP1.
1) Which upgrade option do you use?
Iso images ; Ordering/using DVDs/CD ; Download Direct from IBM to HMC
2) Have you ever used flash drive for code updates?

You neglected to say what model of HMC you had. This does have a bearing on what version of HMC code to run. We replaced all of our HMCs to upgrade to ones that could run newer HMC code and support above Power 6 hardware.
We're at HMC code 8.8.2.0 SP1. Been running this for a month now.

8205 E6C - V7R1 HMC managed.
HMC at 7770 SP 3 MH01409 ; MH 01422
Firmware currently at : AL740_152_042 MH01418 06/30/14
AL740_156_042 became available 02/02/15.
From the readme, this firmware is both Not deferred and NON Pervasive, so can be applied immediately with no IPL.
I meet the minimum HMC code level, but higher HMC code level is recommended.
The Minimum HMC Code level for this firmware is: HMC V7 R7.4.0 (PTF
MH01273 or MH01274) with PTF MH01275 (Mandatory efix).
Although the Minimum HMC Code level for this firmware is listed above, HMC
V7 R7.9.0 Service Pack 1 (PTF MH01428) with security fix (PTF MH01473) and POODLE fix (PTF MH01484) or higher is recommended.
Any thoughts from the group?
