I'm looking for some IBM document or statement that indicates
it is a considered "Best Practice" to locate the load source
on SSD in a 5877 Expansion Unit (or equivalent) as opposed to
having it reside in the CEC attached to the MFIOP.

Has anyone seen any references to this, especially on the
newer Power8 servers?

No such documenttion exists.

The closest you will come is the PCIe adapter placement guide in
the Knolwedge Center which will tell you the prioritization
scheme for placement of adapters irrespective of load source.

As far as whether a specific drive bay in an EXP24S (5887) or
the CEC needs to be set as the load source location, thankfully
those days went bye-bye with the death of SCSI drives and
addressing rules.
