Putty can do standard Telnet, SSH or RLogin. (Note that it's SSH not SSL... two different things.)

And port 443 is https, not telnet! Telnet over SSL is normally 992.

(Hey, you asked to be corrected if you're wrong...)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't putty default to secured? As in SSL?

From a DOS command prompt try
telnet myibmi
see if that works. That doesn't use IBM i Series Access for Windows
licensing and stuff.
If that doesn't work, then try it again with the appropriate option to do
it secured.

This is unsecured:
telnet myibmi 23

I am not sure if simply doing
telnet myibmi 443
will initiate a secure session.

A really simple test. Can you telnet to yourself? From an IBM i session
try
TELNET RMTSYS(youribmi) PORT(23)
