It's good to hear some of the harm organizations have suffered after
migrating to Windows and the likes of Oracle. Virtually every migration
story I have ever heard failed to meet expectations, and most led to large
cost overruns and recurring server outages. It appears that migrations
involving a conversion of RPG and CL code bases were the most prone to
failure. Ask any company that has used California software, whether they
remained with the converted code, or whether the disastrous results
eventually forced them into a rewrite from scratch.

Gary, what do you mean by alternative to upgrading? Is the concern with an
upgrade to IBM i on Power 8? Or a concern about modernizing legacy
applications, continuing to use RPG and native interfaces?

named California Software but is also known as Infinite Corporation.
Their website rang a bell when I saw BABY36 and BABY i there. They,
essentially, convert displays from DDS to GUI format and have their
own language compilers. Everything that is converted runs on Windows
or Linux so DB2 is also translated to SQL Server or Oracle.

I haven't heard much about them over the years - pro or con. Anyone
have any comments on their products - pro or con? Contact me
