I was told by IBM people who know these things that the HMC level to FSP level is not as important as we once thought it to be.

Effectively the rues are:

1) If your system is supported by that HMC release then the HMC will work with any level of FSP code releases prior to that HMC release.
NOTE: Capability may be missing if FSP code is downlevel!

2) Don't mix HMC releases on the same server. (e.g. for redundant HMCs keep them at the same level and service pack.)

So since HMC Version 8.anything does not support POWER5 that's completely off the table. If you have POWER5 don't go there.

Since 8.8.2 is brand new and does support POWER8, it should work with any FSP level currently available.

THAT SAID this does NOT mean you can ignore FSP Levels! It just means that you can upgrade your HMC first, get that done and then do the FSP code later during low usage times (concurrent) or during a maintenance window (disruptive).

yeah, I knew the 'latest release levels' kind of went casters up, but I
was hoping the compatibility was being updated.

I opened a ticket to confirm compatible levels of HMC code. The gent had
no knowledge of the existence of the outdated website. He uses the other
one. He may shake some bushes but recommended that I hit the web feedback
button - which I did.
