Two things. "Because our ERP system stores dates as numeric YYYYMMDD...".
That and some (now retired) belief that if the field type wasn't
available more than 20 years ago it's too new fangled to be used on
computers.

Now I have heard some people dislike date fields because it's hard to do
"special meanings". First, they often have a fear of null values. Second,
special dates like Michaelangelo's birthday or some such things may not
stick out as well as dates like all zeros or all nines. I see what they
are saying but I also think it adds to the difficulty of querying the
database. Now you have to put some error trapping in your SQL date
conversion to convert these special values into some other special
value... Nothing is insurmountable, but it really adds to the complexity.
