The internal search function is temporarily non-functional. The current search engine is no longer viable and we are researching alternatives.
As a stop gap measure, we are using Google's custom search engine service.

And, saving as text is very easily done. Many moons ago I wrote a spool file archive utility proof-of-concept using some Client Access (probably PC/Support 400 at that time) API's that converted spool files to text, brought them down to an optical jukebox attached to a PC, and could then bring the text file back and convert to a spool file and display it.
Also copied 10's of thousands of spool files to text and saved on CD's when a prior employer was too cheap to pay for (in those days) microfiche. It was *only* time & attendance and payroll reports that we needed to keep for 7 years - V4 or early V5 as I recall - no spool file save and running low on disk. The GM at the time said "Too much money - sometimes you just have to take a chance - get rid of them". He wouldn't pay for disk either. Guess I was more responsible than him - I saved them - besides, who do you think would have been thrown under the bus if they were needed and had been deleted?
Assuming they are SCS spool files, you can save a LOT of them on a CD or DVD if the users are adamant - or, in my case at the time, if you have a PHB.

1) Is PDF mandatory? Can it be text? CPYSPLF will create (ugly but

A bonus of this approach: Text files are extremely compressible,
which further helps with conserving DASD.
