Alan,

Today it's just me getting acquainted: I was surprised at how simple V7R1 makes creating a basic PDF.

My next step is to automate a program that currently reports errors found by our robotic picking system.
That program creates the typical spool file for errors reported by the picking system.
We need those errors e-mailed to our Order Dispatch team.

An example:

Each afternoon, customer orders that are ready are selected by the Dispatch Team which converts
orders into (virtual) pallets of product that can be handled by our warehouse, our various delivery
vehicles and our customers.

Like our customers, their orders, our pallets and delivery vehicles, all come in various shapes and sizes
so the Dispatch team is trained to organize orders into pallet configurations that 1) are stable, 2) able to
be processed by robotic equipment and 3) appropriate for delivery to specific customers.

Think Costco vs 7-11 and you get a sense of what I'm trying to describe.

Our warehouse equipment is limited to pallets of a ton or less and just under 6 feet total height.
There are many different pallets/shipping containers that fall into about four shape-size categories.

With all this on the Dispatch Team's plate, there are a number of errors that will be reported by the
robot, each of which mean "I will have nothing to do with this load/collection of pallets because . . ."

As you can imagine, the Dispatch Team is very busy, heads down, so skipping the trip to the printer
to try to find a piece of paper will be a big step up in efficiency for us.

For me, this is a break-through day because this iSeries feature is the first time I've had the tools in
my hands (I'm a little behind times you can see) to create the kind of error reporting that can meet
our warehouses' needs.

I expect next to be sending text messages to phones/tablets on our shop floor . . .

FWIW, I just now printed a PDF created on a V7R1 iSeries with:

5770TS1 *BASE IBM Transform Services for i
5770TS1 1 Transforms - AFP to PDF Transform

OVRPRTF FILE(QPJOBLOG) DEVTYPE(*AFPDS) TOSTMF('/mySharedDir/') WSCST(*PDF) DSPJOB OUTPUT(*PRINT) OPTION(*JOBLOG)

mySharedDir is a Directory on the iSeries IFS.
I made it shared so I could map to it from my pc.

I then created an e-mail to me with the pdf created in mySharedDir attached, received said e-mail, opened the attachment and printed using:

HP LaserJet 4250n - a printer on our local network (also mapped to our iSeries)

Just happen to be testing 'new' features/ptf's installed by ops mgr.

Could not have done this today without Midrange and the web.

Happy New Year!

Alan

what type of printers are we talking about and how are they connected?

One option would be to use Google Cloud Print.

If you set up any printer using Google Cloud Print you could use our
GreenTools for Google Apps (G4G) with the Google Cloud Print Addon to
print the PDF file to pretty much any printer that is set up in Google
Cloud Print.

Not only can you send the PDF file from the IFS to the printer using
this method you can use a URL for the PDF location as well.

You can check out more info at www.bvstools.com/g4g.html.

Hi Alan,

If you're interested in native PDF printing, let me know and I'll
put you in touch with our sales team.

We have a PDF and TIFF utilities component that can print PDF
documents
to
regular HP laser printers from the IFS.

Hi everyone
Hope you had a really merry Christmas, and hope you have a really
great New Year Before I forget - because I generally do, we are on
V5r4

We are in the process of using a new courier, and part of that
process is to receive data from the courier, via web services,
decode it from Base64 and unzip the data We seem to have this
working The end result is that we have 2 sets of data One is for
labels - which we have printed, and the second is pdf files I have
searched the internet on how to print pdf
files
from the AS/400 - with no success I have been told that it's the
printers we are printing to I have also been told that we need to
load some
software
onto the AS/400 to convert FROM pdf to some other format

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Do we need new printers? If so - which type?
Do we need software? If so - what?

I can (hopefully) answer any questions that needs to be asked
