Just make sure to buy the right drives for it. I series drives have a different firmware and sector size or something like that. Instead of being a 36gb SCSI drive it will be 35gb. If you don't get a proper disk the system won't work with it. I nearly made the mistake of buying up generic drives to use.

You only need one drive for an install I think. My entire base system is on one disk out of the whole bunch. Wonder what happens when that disk goes south.

I made the same mistake with an old 270 years ago and thought the OS came
with the machine. Fortunately, it was given to me so there were no out of
pocket expenses. Unfortunately the tape drive was broken so I had to do
fresh installs every 69 days. One really has to want to play with a
machine to go through that pain. However, I did get really good at OS
installs.

Hopefully I might be about to get really good at OS installs also, if I can
find the remaining things I need to get started. I just acquired a
9406-270. Sadly it wasn't given to me, and it has no DASD. I'll need to
locate drives for it, a terminal for a console, and install media. I knew
before acquiring it that the best I could hope for without license keys
would be a base OS install that would have to be restored/reinstalled every
couple of months. This will be strictly for home/personal use/education. I
have a free account on PUB1.DE, and QSYSOPR access at work, but wanted a box
with full access at home to try things I can't do on the above two systems.
Does anyone know where I might find install media for a 9406-270? Also, I
know I need AS/400 specific drives with the right firmware and low level
format. Does anyone have recommendations on the minimum number and size of
drives I need to look for to perform an OS install?

What's the definition of a legacy system? One that works!
