I made the same mistake with an old 270 years ago and thought the OS came
with the machine. Fortunately, it was given to me so there were no out of
pocket expenses. Unfortunately the tape drive was broken so I had to do
fresh installs every 69 days. One really has to want to play with a
machine to go through that pain. However, I did get really good at OS
installs.
