Not sure how much later "later' is - the exit might still be your ticket - the data queue entry would have the job name and all, and you could put all that on some file, to check later if you want to cancel it while it's still on the job queue.

I'm sure i'm missing something here - it still doesn't grok!

no intention of canceling. But it's good to be able to cancel should
