As far as customizing a trigger to display a pop up window, and the
trigger be smart enough to determine the client and display the
appropriate window, would that really be acceptable?
Let's say your DB admin is different than your developer. Your developer
probably wouldn't like the pop up window. If web it probably wouldn't use
the right CSS (or whatever's in fashion this afternoon). If 5250, who
wants a pop up window versus highlighting the column in error and
displaying a message at the command line? In Run An SQL Script the window
would go where? If you're updating data from Excel the window goes where?
Would you generate joblog, printout, excel spreadsheet of errors, PDF
list, etc if it was a traditional batch job? Keeping in mind that each
list would only contain one row!

No, the trigger needs to active some status code that the developer can
process as desired.
