I have to admin the HL hierarchy confuses me a bit. Are you saying I can
nest items within a package?

here is a snippet of an 856:
HL*2*1*O
PRF*90725280
REF*CO*76774283299997
REF*VN*288518
HL*3*2*P
MAN*CP*1Z0X31980340197308
HL*4*3*I
LIN*0002*EN*5060355516194
SN1**1*EA
HL*5*3*I
LIN*0001*EN*5060355513728
SN1**1*EA

if I had a 2nd package in the shipment it would be something like the
following?
HL*6*2*P
MAN*CP*1Z0X31980340197308
HL*7*6*I
LIN*0002*EN*5060355516194
SN1**1*EA
HL*8*6*I
LIN*0001*EN*5060355513728
SN1**1*EA

HL*6*2*P says this is a package that is part of HL 2 ( the order ). And
the following items are within the HL*6 package?

The EDI 856 Standard provides for 2 layers of detail for an invoice line
1. Item / Carton
Item is the Header and Carton is the detail.
This is used when you are shipping multiple cartons of the same item.

2. Carton / Item
I believe that this is what you are looking for.
Carton is the Header and Item is the detail
This is used when a carton can have multiple items in it.

I do not recall the loop identifiers for these, but it should be in you 856
specifications.

For us, the EDI 856 reports the contents of each 'pallet'.
Our business tends not to use cartons due to the size and weight of
our products, but the concept for cartons and pallets is about the same:
a detailed list of exactly what is delivered.
Each EDI 856 'document' has a unique ASN number and has ship from
and ship to info in addition to the list of contents.
Each pallet or carton is identified with a label (SSCC-18 for us) which
also has a unique identifier. Consult GS1-128 for details on the SSCC-18
or maybe there is something different for cartons - I don't know.

Subject: using EDI 856 to send shipping carton detail info

can an EDI 856 be used to report the contents of each carton being
shipped?

The 856s I have been sending are pretty much shipment versions of an 850.
Where the LIN and SN1 segments of the 856 match up with the PO1 segments
of the 850. And tracking numbers are sent in REF segments or in MAN
segments at the P Package HL level of the 856.

I want to include the shipping charge for each package in the 856.

But also more detail as to the contents of each carton being shipped. Can
the 856 be used for carton level detail?

thanks,
