I traced it down to a combo of a couple things:

1. Google Drive running on 3 machines at once, backing up files (it's a
resource and network PIG, but works great for backups)

2. The connection my i was on wasn't the best (it was behind a wireless
repeater)

I had moved it a few months ago and it worked fine.

Today I moved it back to the main office behind the main router. After
spending a couple hours remembering how to reset the DST QCONSOLE password
I got on and did an attended IP, things worked great, and we're back in
business.

Hoping now I don't get an alert it goes down again.

Thanks for the ideas folks! I now have my laptop hooked up as a dedicated
console and it's working fine (until I need to reset QCONSOLE again... lol)

Something smells 'switchy' :-)

From a PC on the same subnet:

If you PING the IP address then do arp -a do you see the IP address in
the returned list?

If you do does it have a valid mac (Physical) Address assigned?

If so can you log into the switch and show it's mac address table to see
on which port that the switch believes those mac address exist?

You didn't say so I'm assuming your Power System has just the base
Ethernet adapter with ports T5 and T6. The LAN console and the IBM i IP
stack are independent AND each uses one of the two ports. Because of
this it's exceptionally unlikely this is an IP problem. Also unlikely to
be a cable problem at least from the switch to the server since there
are two of 'em.

Could be the switch itself and that is my #1 suspect.

Could also be the Ethernet adapter in your Server. Bad news if this is
the case is that it's on the planar board so replacement means the
entire board. Good news is you can abandon those ports and add a 5706
card and use that instead.

Once you do get back into the machine again record the MAC addresses for
the card's two ports for future troubleshooting.

Well, it's back down again. It was up working for a while, now the
same
thing. Can't ping any IP interface, not even the LAN console.

I guess I'll look into it more over the weekend. The governor shut down
school on Monday so I'll have my wife and kids to help too (*cough*). :)

Not being able to ping the LAN console address leads me to think
something
else happened to the system(not a tcpip issue). The LAN console tcpip
stack is in the lic where the "regular" tcpip is in the OS.

Check your logs to find the real cause of the outage.

I have a monitoring service that tells me when my web site is up or
down.
It's hosted on my i (now to be called AS/400 from now on) 515 running
V5R4
at my office.

Tonight I got an email saying it was down. Cool, it works. Not cool,
my
site was actually down.

I got on the LAN that the AS/400 is on. Couldn't ping any IP
interfaces
on
it. Not even the LAN console IP address.

I ended up doing a "manual IPL" and things were fine after that.

But that leads me to ask... if even my LAN console IP was down, how
the
heck am I supposed to be able to get onto the machine to see what is
going
on? I was quite troubled and now have a bald spot on the side of my
head
where I was scratching it. :)

Thanks for any info... after this, I'd actually like to be able to set
up
a dedicated PC to be a console, preferably not over IP. If that's
possible, I'm all ears as I have multiple old laptops I could use for
consoles. :)
