What interpreters? The ones used by RUNSQLSTM?

Instead of RUNSQLSTM use the Qshell DB2 utility to run the files in the IFS you created with Nav. Record length is unimportant.

You're seeing the date and sequence in the source file members because you're opening them in RDp as stream files. Use the LPEX editor and open directly from source file members in RSE. LPEX knows what to do with the date and sequence.

The reason to limit to 72 or 80 chars is that the script interpreters do not
read past 72 or 80 chars.
