Thank you to those who weighed in on this .... the replacement unit should be here on Monday and it will get installed.  Just an investment in some time, the disc itself is covered by our IBM maintenance agreement.

Even IF it turns out the thing is fine IBM has put a lot of effort into
figuring out what constitutes a valid condition for predictive failure.
    If they call it out, it's dead to me.
