So true..... many times I have been asked "why do we do this this way" or "I was told to always to this every Monday morning at 9:00 but even though I have been doing it for 5 years I never really knew what it did. Can you tell me what it does and why I do it?" or "why does the custom program you wrote for us, following our specifications on the business rules we said had to be followed, make us follow those rules when we don't want to?"

I am also from a tech. school (25 + ago) but my first boss defiantly taught me how to ask the business questions required to get the job done correctly.

Never thought most of my job would being telling the business what they do daily..etc..lol

So that is what I want to bring to future students.

Regards,
Bill Hopkins

HEY!!! What's wrong with a tech school? I graduated from a tech school, and work at a tech school, and have hired many programmers over by 35 years from tech schools. I have found programmers from tech schools to be better prepared to hit the ground running over BS school graduates or master degree graduates who want to deal more with concepts and current trends and big picture than coding and keeping the business running efficiently. Don't get me wrong. Every organization needs someone thinking about the future and staying aware of what the world is doing but I would only want one of those for every 10 programmers.

Yeah. Most of the schools on the list are tech schools or junior colleges which kind of equates a career with welding or refrigeration repair.

Gotta love it when their course listing for IBM i only includes:
Course offerings: CIS421 Study of Legacy Systems

Jon,
Thanks for bringing this up. I'll definitely help out. One
question I have for the group. I seem to recall a website that showed
universities that did have some 'i' in the curriculum. Does this sound
familiar to anyone?

thanks, Larry

Many of us have long been concerned over the lack of IBM i aware college
graduates.

Our friend Jim Buck has started a new initiative in partnership with IBM
and others. The "missing ingredient" is companies and additional schools
to commit to the program.

That is where you all can help.

There are details in our blog this week
http://ibmsystemsmag.blogs.com/idevelop/2013/06/need-more-help-help-yourself.html

and if like us you think this a good idea then please take the survey and
take the first step to helping to make this program a reality.
