Replying to this message, because I am too lazy to find the Opening Post or my reply suggesting similar and also because the quoted text is a good lead-in.

And there is also the option to use OPNQRYF to share the ODP with an RLA program [although I am under the impression this is not what the Original Poster wants], with the selection performed by the query, most likely using the QRYSLT parameter. Although not a /logical file/ specifically, it is in effect a logical view\path to the data, and a temporary query ODP may be more desirable than a temporary logical file.

A possible example:

dcl &todaysdate *char 08 stg(*defined) defvar(&svDateTime 1)

rtvsysval QDATETIME &svDateTime
ovrdbf thefile share(*yes) ovrscope(as_appropriate)
