FUD?  No.  Personal experience?  Yes.

Sure thousands of API's may not have changed but it seemed many of the 
ones I chose, for instance much of the *easy* coding I did in Access 
95/98, never made it much past Access 2000 and it was only because I was 
able to jury-rig Access 2000 to run in Windows 7 that I was able to keep 
the app alive for my customer.   You guys must rock if you have apps 
written for Windows 95 that are still running on Windows 8 without 
coding tweaks.  I probably had issues because rather than being a 
"classically trained" programmer, I am just a seat of the pants kind of 
guy.  I do what is easiest and has a future (at least *my* future).

I love writing code. On i, on Windows, on Linux using RDP, MyEclipse, 
VS2012.  I do them all.  I just had enough bad experiences with 
Microsoft changing API's and licensing that I found the open source 
world more productive and less costly. Those bad experiences went back 
over 10 years but frankly, once bitten, twice shy, as they say (or 
maybe, when it comes to Microsoft: "Once bitten, twice i" since we are 
coining catch phrases :-)   )
