Here is a basic summary list of the installation steps. Configuring VIOS TCP/IP, vSCSI, or SEA adapters is another topic all of its own. I would suggest you familiarize yourself with navigating into the AIX kernel using the "oem_setup_env" command. I tend to do a lot of stuff from there as opposed to the VIO restricted shell.

As for basic installation:
1) Connect to the HMC via SSH and open the VTMENU command, select the VIOS server from the menu
2) Boot from VIOS DVD or NIM server via SMS_BOOT mode (kind of like D source IPL)
3) Follow prompts to select boot device (usually optical)
4) Continue following boot prompts
5) Select installation device (DASD and connected SAN LUNS will be visible to select from)
6) Installation takes about 30 minutes (the screen will give you statuses)
7) When it finishes you will get a logon prompt, use "padmin" for the logon profile
8) Accept the software license agreement with the "license -accept" command
9) Extend your root volume (VIOS load source) to another disk unit for redundancy using command "extendvg -f rootvg hdiskX"
10) Activate root volume mirroring between your two load source disks using command "mirrorios -f -defer hdiskX"
11) List your volume groups to ensure the rootvg volume is spread over two disk units "lsvg -lv rootvg" (ensure there are two physical volumes in the PV column)
12) Change your bootlist to ensure both of the rootvg volumes are included "bootlist -mode normal hdiskX hdiskY"
13) Reboot to ensure a clean initial configuration "shutdown -restart"

Subject: VIOS from scratch

I've been mucking around with a nice POWER6 that we got cheap from IBM-Remarketing a few weeks ago. Installed VIOS 2.x and got a feel around.
I've found some videos explaining initial configuration, but the config was not exactly the same (it assumed i had a non-IVE network card and set up the VIOS-HMC link and general bridge thru that).
Is there a good VIOS from scratch tutorial anywhere?
Also, the HMC reports that this machine has no 5250 capabilities, but it DOES have IBM i capabilities. Would that be like saying "You have a 1000cpw batch and 0 interactive machine"?
I've read a lot of manuals and think i have most of the theory behind VIOS (some concepts are harder, like the whole IVE-LHEA but not impossible).
Infocenter has not been kind to me since it seems only CE work at this level (weird since i remember a big client that had its people trained to reinstall VIOS in case of disaster).
That's about it, if anyone has experience with this, feel free to share. I can be more specific about the problems i'm having but i would rather read the book than nag someone.

Best Regards,
