No, you don't. I avoid analyzing IBM output spool files like the plague.
Yes, it's more work to use IBM's API's, but having to support multiple
releases of OS (well, in the 3 months or less it normally takes us to get
them all on the current OS) and having your utilities straddle multiple
spool file formats, I ran to APIs.
Bruce Vining has a book on APIs at work. I've never cracked the cover on
that.
