That's the thing. This system goes way back to 4.2 and I've seen stuff
in QGPL like configurations that I know shouldn't be there but doesn't
seem to hurt anything.
Haven't looked at QUSRSYS. much. Guess I could compare them.
Like the idea of restoring *New.

If I understand you correctly IBM i and the license program products are
already on the new system. The trick is QGPL and QUSRSYS which is why
your partner wants to scratch reload it. If, and only if, you have all
of the configurations set up properly on the new box, then all you
should need to do for QGPL and QUSRSYS is restore *NEW objects, that
will pick up anything you missed. Then lay down all of the user
libraries and directories etc.

The absolute safest way to go is the method your partner is suggesting,
it will take longer, but you'll wind up with everything over on the new
system.

Personally I like building the OS and the environment first, and then
re-implementing the user applications on the new box because it provides
an opportunity to clean up the system. That said, it also takes a bit
more planning.

I have a question concerning an upgrade that we are making this weekend.
I'm taking a Power 5 to a Power 7+ Model D, from 6.1.1 to 6.1.1. The
reason
for the same release is not up for discussion: has to do with release 7
vendor
issues that won't be rectified until sometime in the fall. Eb34 has
been
installed on
the Power 7 and the Lic goes on and the disk config is all set up. This
is
a LAN
console environment.

My business partner has a specific way of upgrading the system and it
includes
putting the Respin 6.1.1 I-BASE-K on the power 5, doing a Save 21 and
coming
forward with the new config. Basically redoing what is already set up on
the Power 7.

Are there things that I don;t understand here or can either method,
albeit time, be
considered acceptable. I understand that PTF's will need to be
reapplied,
but that
seems to be a trivial issue.
