It was a poor design, often done in the dark ages to denormalize a
database for faster queries back when you were running vacuum tubes,
S/36's and AS/400's. Why a total quantity would make sense escapes me.
Let's see, I ordered 2 Chryslers, 4 hammers and 6,000 nails so my order
quantity is 6,006. Worthless, except as a checksum. Again, in
prejournalling, no commitment control, abhorrence of triggers and other
techniques that weren't common before IBM i, it may have been useful to
have this checksum.
