In addition, the strategy has changed - full releases are farther apart, and technology refreshes are delivering functionality more often, with less disruption to operations. Consider RUNSQL (even if it doesn't do SELECTs) and namespace support in XML-INTO.

I don't think IBM "caring" has anything to do with it Don. Apart from perhaps outfits like Apple and MS, does anybody do that kind of stuff any more? Everything like that is internet based.

Do you see IBM doing any big announcement meetings for z? or AIX or ... so numbers have nothing to do with it either. Just a different world.
