Thin Console is dead on Power 6 and above. I think your power 5 520
should be able to run thin console on 6.1 and 7.1.

Thin Console not supported on POWER6 systems, January 2008
IBM plans that the 9944-100 Thin Console will not be supported on
POWER6 systems. Note that significant
improvements on the installation ease of the LAN Console are provided
in i5/OS V6R1, thus reducing the
need for the Thin Console.

Twinax is dead on Power 7.
IBM i twinaxial console is not supported on POWER7 systems because
input-output processor (IOP) is not
supported on POWER7 systems. For more information on changing
consoles, see Working with consoles,
terminals, and interfaces for POWER7 processor-based systems.

For a single lpar system I think Lan Console is the recommended direction.
For a multi lpar system HMC is recommended, if not mandatory.

Forget about SDMC. That's been pulled.
