Pete:
As of a few minutes ago, the BP could only get keys for 90 days or restock
the system back to IBM
with a "restocking fee" of 15%. That's about 6K.
So I'm thinking she has another choice. She could stay on 6.1 and get
keys for the new box at 6.1
and look to upgrade somewhere down the road.
I know that will work because the banking system she is on just recently
certified 7.1 and the code
underneath doesn't use any new 7.1 bells and whistles.
I know refresh updates are worth everything now but this is not a happy
lady and.... I have to live with her.

She shouldn't be upset with IBM, but she should change her Business
Partner now. This is the BP fault for not getting the keys first. In
fact, in order to move the licenses, the BP had to do a Records Purpose
Only (RPO) MES on her 520 to upgrade it to 7.1 first, and then transfer
the licenses at the same level. If the BP had ordered the software for
the 520 first, and gotten the keys, then this isn't an issue.
Don't blame IBM.

Just a heads up for those of you moving to the new 7xx boxes.
My wife works for a bank that recently ordered and received a new Power 7+
720. Really nice little P05 that is big enough to support this small
community bank.
She's been trying to get 7.1 keys for the existing 520 and expected that
when she ordered the system she would have time to test and move the old
system to the new and also expected that she'd upgrade to 7.1 from 6.1 on
her 520 for an easy transition.
By ordering and therefore, tipping her hand, IBM removed her ability to
order and get 7.1 for
for her 520. They will only give her 15 day keys. She's so upset with
this tactic, she's returning the
system.
