If there are sufficient disk arms on the system, (more than 6 but preferably 12 or so) then Image catalogs will be faster than physical DVD by quite a bit. Lacking the disk arms, if you can get someone to cut you a distribution tape the tape drive will be faster than the DVD by a good margin.
