Well, reformatting and writing to drives doesn't eliminate the possibility
of reading what was there before. Sounds odd, but there are extremely
sensitive heads that can read, in essence, the residue left over from a
disk write. We're talking about the magnetic fields in the area around the
actual sector. So simply erasing or zeroing out the contents of a drive,
and even writing fresh data to the drive, isn't enough. A DOD wipe does
multiple passes, each using a different bit pattern, and is designed to
randomize content enough that tools like I described aren't effective.

It takes effort & equipment, but it is possible.

Subject: RE: DISK Sanitizer Help

In a single level storage system like the IBMi, what are the chances that
any useful data could be retrieved from a disk if you were to:

1.) Power Down the system...

2.) Rearrange the disk drives in the disk subsystem slots.

3.) IPL to DST and reconfigure the disk hardware.

I would think that the chances of anyone getting any useful data off of
these drives would be less than your chances of being hit by a lighting
strike on your way home tonight.
