FMTDTA works fine. I've used it for more than 30 years. I don't
recommend it in 2013 though. It relies on knowing what positions in the
file to sort, not column names.

Here's an example of a tagalong sort:

HFILE 20A X
O C 1NEC2
FNC 18 31
FNC 33 38
FDC 1 427

In my opinion, you'd be better served to create the work file as a keyed
file and then you can easily read it in keyed order.

Here's an old reference, but FMTDTA hasn't changed in the intervening 20
years. http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/iseries/v5r1/ic2924/books/c0918260.pdf

Well, there is FMTDTA. Just sorts the file. Look for iSeries FMTDTA for
examples.

I would like to sort WORKFILE1 in place, preferably using SQL.

Is this possible?

Or must I create another table with SQL CREATE and then CPYF it back to
the original file.

Thanks!
