Cost is not really an issue if I can get my hands on evaluation software -
all my IBM machines run in demo mode, and I reinstall one every week.
It's just a hobby, and each time I'll do it, I see something new that I
didn't notice and this way I learn about it ;-).
I called it a 'thingy', because I meant 'something unknown and not clearly
defined which I want to learn things about'

While I won't say it absolutely will not run, VIOS (PowerVM) is not
AIX. True it is based on AIX but it is not the same.
The check is in the firmware anyway, if the firmware does not recognize
an acceptable OS then it will not boot. When you look at the
environment column of the HMC you will see it's recognized as "Virtual
I/O Server" not "AIX".
PowerVM is hardly a "thingy", but a very powerful and industry leading
virtualization technology.
As to the cost of putting up a system with IBM i, AIX, Power Linux, and
PowerVM, you could get that done for about $15K with most all the toys
needed. Too much of a capital outlay for an individual, yep, so call
iDevCloud.com and get a partition.

that PowerVM VIOS should run on it (or I might understand thingsCommuniGate(r) Pro*

The PowerVM thingy is quite new to me, atm my most recent machine is a
Model 270.
