You should TRY to skip V6R1 and go directly to V7R1, BUT there are a few items to note that if not resolved, going to 6.1 is the right path. Before I put a list down, I want to make sure that every understands just because a program passes ANZOBJCVN it doesn't guarantee that it will work *CORRECTLY* on 6.1/7.1, it means that it can be re-encapsulated on the release. This is a big difference, and another reason why it is good to have a test before hand.
Also note, that if you are upgrading to 6.1, always upgrade to 6.1.1 of the LIC (5761-999). If you are on V5R4, and looking to go to V6.1 or 7.1, then you need to pay attention to the following:
1) If you are on 6.0 of websphere, that doesn't work on 7.1 of the OS. Either upgrade to Websphere 6.1 or 7, or upgrade only to 6.1 of the OS.
2) If you are using ANYNET, support is gone at 7.1. Either upgrade to Enterprise Extenders, or only go to 6.1.
3) If you are using Lotus Notes/Domino, you need to check which versions are supported at 6.1 and 7.1 (Only 8.5.1, 8.5.2, and 8.5.3 are supported at 7.1, 8.0.x and 8.5 are not supported).
4) If you have option 10 of Java, that is supported at 6.1 and NOT supported at 7.1.
5) If you have Operations Direct Console (with the weird modem cable), that isn't supported at 7.1, you need to upgrade to LAN Console first.
So, when people say always upgrade to 7.1, I would disagree with them. Always try to upgrade to 7.1, but if you can't because of any of the above reasons, then upgrading to 6.1 is the absolute best thing to do than remain on V5R4. 7.1 has so many great enhancements, and everyone who we upgrade is always telling us about how much better the machine is running or some cool new feature they are using.
