We use TIFF and JPG, never used PDF (nor single page or with transparency).

We print from Iseries (we produce an AFP stream file and the external
service prints and delivers it to he customers).

Marco,

What I am printing is not generated by a job on the iSeries. The images
are scanned and stored on the iSeries. What I need to be able to do is
print any number of these images given an account number and list of
document types to print.

Will AFPDS work with files that are already in TIF or PDF format?

You can use AFPDS printer files, they support:

Images (single page PDF and TIFF and others) Accurate Text Position Fonts
and many other nice futures.

I think the only real limitation about Images via AFPRSC is scaling.

Once you have an AFPDS spool file you can:

Print it on a device (without any PC in the middle) Generate a PDF in IFS
Generate a AFP stream file

An AFP stream file is very usefull since most of the external printig
services
use AFP (very popular in Unix). All what you need is sending the file
(via FTP
or whatever they prefer) and they can print it WITHOUT any tools or
converter.

Just to give you an example on how simple is the proces this is the
command
to convert AFPDS spool files into AFP straem files (including Indexing
and
Resorces: Images, Overlay, Fonts, Page Segmnets and Form Definitions):

I am working on the application design now.

This will be replacing a manual process we have in place today. Our
legal department gets several requests a year from state auditors for
images of our loan documentation. A print run can be a few hundred
into the tens of thousands depending on the request. Currently there
is a lot of manual work to take a spreadsheet, put in onto the IFS,
and using a dedicated PC run a program that generates the print
documents. The PC program has to be monitored the entire time it runs
and will not run on Windows 7. My task is to come up with a
replacement solution that can be completely handed over to the
business.

What's driving it? Is is a user on a green screen selecting

are wanting to print a graphic from that then you would probably
look at doing a call to a PC program (Your .Net program) from the
400 to print

image. If it is a user in a PC program you are going to trigger it

Another option (non IBM i solution) is to write the function in
.NET

By far the easiest solution in my opinion is to do it in .NET if
you
can. The
amount of code to accomplish the same goal will be much smaller
in .NET versus the alternatives.
