What does the compiler do with this:

02 S2 REDEFINES S1.
03 S2A PIC XXX.

... what happens if S2A and S2B get
changed from PIC XXX to PIC X(6)? My thought would be an error to the
effect that S2 redefines S1 with unequal size.

The compiler seems accepts the version with the XXX's. With the XXX's changed to X(6), it complains that it's redefining a smaller item.

Either way, it ignores the redefine S2 for XML GENERATE.

Message . . . . : The subordinate item 'S2' of XML GENERATE FROM
identifier 'REC' is ignored.
Cause . . . . . : XML GENERATE statement ignores a group item in
identifier 'REC' if all its subordinate items are ignored. Any
subordinate FILLER elementary item, or subordinate item whose data
description specifies the REDEFINES clause or RENAMES clause will b
ignored by the XML GENERATE statement.

Here's the rules for XML GENERATE.
