My question/comment wasn't meant to start a what's better "GUI vs green
screen" discussion - we've had that one plenty of times before and we all
know the pat answer - use the tool that's right for the job.

My comment was in response to one of the many options available for the
presentation layer when attempting to modernize - and what Common has to
offer in terms of .net curriculum.

As I stated in my initial post, we have web enabled some of our apps using
RPGsp. But we are also sitting on over 20+ years of code that isn't going
anywhere soon. We are working to modernize and have quite an array of
modularized functions and service programs supporting calls from
traditional RPGLE green screen and report programs along side RPGsp browser
based applications.

"However, I don't like that you are associating GreenScreen=IBMi, and
GUI=Windows.

You can (and should!) write GUI apps on IBM i. I've been telling people to
do that for 10+ years. Your users shouldn't know or care where the data
resides... what they should know/care about is that it's stable, and always
there when they need it. And IBM i excels at that.

IBM i can be a major player in that world too, using GUI technologies
like web. The only reason you still code green screens is because you
(or someone else in your environment) has made that choice.

Note that we actively discourage green-screen sessions at COMMON"

Scott - my apologies if you didn't like my choice of semantics - I have
over 800 users and trying to get them to use the correct terminology is
like trying to get to Trevor to not talk about how we refer to the system.
I often use their terminology because it's the only thing they understand -
and obviously the users don't know and don't care where the data resides,
(nor should they) - and as I stated in my initial post, the back-end would
remain on the i.

When we court doctors to join our organization and they see a green screen,
their perception can be somewhat diminished - but when we tell them it's
the same hardware used by Watson on Jeopardy it tends to enlighten them.

Richard for sharing that.
