Chuck,
Thank you for your (as always) explicit detail. I've searched google several
times recently, without this result.

I'm trying to confirm the doc DDS for Printer Files V6R1
page 33 is not an avail feature.
In the source editing it tells me the keyword invalid.
If I accept with errors, the compiler fails to gen the PRTF.
Page 34 has example
A R BOX4 BOX(1.2 0.5 5.1 6.3 0.2 (*SHADE 50))
I remember early in 6.1 someone mentioned this made the manual but
was not implemented.
In truth I really need shading sometimes in a box, sometimes not in a
box but behind a line of text (like alt row color in html). A page
segment or overlay is kludgy because need same location control as a
box. The area of the page this appears is variable in location & nbr
lines.
Using a Google web search on the following, I found the link and text
from that document [included below that link]; perhaps that is the
reference alluded?:
"box" "shade" "DDS" "6.1" OR "v6r1" OR "v6r1m0"

Shading Fonts Using Special Coded Font, Code Page and Character Set, and
FNTCHRSET DDS
_Document Description_
According to APAR SE06649 "OSP-IPDS SHADING IS NOT WORKING WHEN USING
DDS KEYWORD BOX, SHADING", the shading function of the BOX (Box) DDS
keyword does not work. The function to shade boxes was to be provided
by the printer hardware, and the DDS Reference manual was updated to
indicate this function. The function was then not added to the
hardware. A software solution was attempted but was not successful.
However, the shading function can be performed using special coded font,
code page, and character set objects _provided with this_ _document_
using the FNTCHRSET (Font Character Set) DDS keyword.
