It appears to me that PowerVM is a brand that covers a pretty broad collection of virtualization technologies. IBM appears to be putting more emphasis on the PowerVM brand than any of its operating system, database, and other middleware brands.

Pete Helgren pointed out that PowerVM has an IBM product number. I did some searching on pricing, but I didn't quite understand it. It appeared to range from about $1K to $400K depending on edition and the number of virtual partitions you might be managing.

My understanding is that VIOS is part of AIX and is used primarily to provide an interface between "local" file systems and "network" storage solutions such as storage area networks.

So, you might used PowerVM interfaces to create a couple of partitions (virtual machines). One for IBM i. Another for VIOS. Then set up IBM i storage interfaces to use external network storage devices through VIOS.

I've just been reading about it; Never actually worked with it.

Subject: Re: What platform does PowerVM run on?

One question i have is whether all js12 blades come with PowerVM and
IBM i support, i'm looking at buying a p6 blade for training purposes
and most sellers can't make heads or tails of something so simple as:
Can it run PowerVM or VIOS? can it run an IBM i partition?
