No, no. PowerVM is a virtual machine. You run IBMi or AIX or Linux on the PowerVM. You can connect a 5250 emulator to that OS through the virtual ethernet. Each PowerVM gets its own ethernet address. HMC is just there for configuration and management. I think you can set up a PowerVM without HMC, but HMC makes it all much easier. Somehow you have to configure the relationship between the PowerVM and VIOS or the host OS. As far as I know, the only way to manage VIOS is through HMC. VIOS must have disks and DVD's and ethernet configured.

Thanks for the reply, Dan. Ironically I had just found the Redbook that you referenced. I've begun reading it. So far, my understanding is that PowerVM runs on Power Servers running i, AIX, and Linux. The part I still don't understand is the relationship between PowerVM and and HMC. Is PowerVM essentially an unpublished programming interface? You still need an HMC for the User Interface?
-Nathan.

Surely there are others who could answer this better than I can, but let me get it started.
PowerVM is basically what we've come to know on IBMi as a guested LPAR. PowerVM runs on a POWER box (POWER6 or POWER7). That POWER box will probably also be running IBMi or AIX as it's host operating system. You usually manage your PowerVM's with HMC. You don't directly attach disk or ethernet, DVD or other devices to PowerVM, all that is done through the host or VIOS (Virtual I/O Server).
Take a quick look at this redbook
