At any place in the program where you're tempted to send either an error message to the SysOpr, or ask the operator for a parameter (date, tape ID, library name, etc.) go at least one layer deeper in your code-- how would the operator answer the message, and why can't your program figure it out for itself??
This means data areas with parameters; date files with month end dates; programs that create the data areas for themselves on first execution and fill them with default values (ok, you have to prompt for the 'official' values).
The goal is to remove human intervention (and fumbly fingers) wherever possible.
