A belated thanks to Pat and Jack for the information they provided. I
thought I'd provide an update on where I ended up with this in case
anyone else ends up searching the archives for similar information. I
determined that it is possible to use a direct ethernet connection to
set up a LAN console, so I tried using this method (following the
instructions here:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas153916e16c53487bd8625752300600196),
but in the process I got an A6005008 code, which I understand means
the console could not be found. The status words from functions 12 and
13 are as follows:
12:
03B00061 00000001
00000000 00000000
13:
50010002 00000002
00000C07 00000000

If I'm interpreting these correctly (I'm following this information:
http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/powersys/v3r1m5/index.jsp?topic=/iphbx_p5/troublesrccoded.htm&tocNode=toc:ipha8/hw/4/8/3/4/4/2/),
this means that the machine is currently configured for a
direct-connect console rather than LAN. So, I attempted to use
function 65+21 to change this following these instructions:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v5r3/index.jsp?topic=%2Frzajr%2Frzajrfunctions6521.htm.
I tried several times but never got the A602500A response that I was
looking for. I tried the following functions and got this output:
25 -> 00
26 -> 00
65 -> 01 B M V=F
21 -> FF
11 -> D1008065

I found a thread in the archive of someone who was having the same
problem (http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l/200908/msg00060.html)
but it doesn't look like he ever got those functions working. However,
I finally found another thread
(http://fixunix.com/ibm-as400/506030-how-connect-unknown-system.html)
which states that these functions aren't available prior to V5R3. The
person in the first thread is on V5R2 on the same model as I am and
getting the same output, so I suspect that this is my problem (I'm not
sure what release it's on but V5R2 sounds likely). So, at this point,
my next course of action is going to be seeing if my employer also
happens to have the Operations Console cable lying around that they
used to use with this thing, and failing that, I'll see about
purchasing one.

Thanks to all who read or responded.

I would start with the operations console manual.

The other manuals will be a great help with other hardware related issues.

Hi all,

My employer has allowed me to take home an old 9406-270 that was
retired several years ago and isn't being used for anything.
