That vintage of system as its own small UPS. If those batteries go Dead,
you get the symptom you have. Not even the control panel will light! So do
this
Unplug the Power
Remove the Front, top and left side plastic covers.
Remove the lower left side Metal Cover, might have to remove the upper one
too
You should now see the batteries in the bottom.
I think you will need to remove a bracket but they should just unplug and
come out.
Voltage needs to be 10vdc ( maybe more I don't have the specs handy ).
You can try and charge them or for a very reasonable charge the batteries
can be purchased at Batteries Plus or similar battery stores. IBM I think
wanted like $3000 for the 4 batteries. Batteries Plus was something like
$200-$250 for all 4

I have a old 720 AS/400 (i think 9406 model) that has not been ran in a
couple of years but was working fine when put in storage and was kept in
good condition. I plugged it up the other day and the power supply fan
comes up but the front panel never lights up. I'm getting power to each
tower unit as I checked the cables coming from the power supply. What
would the next thing you would look for? Is there an internal battery that
would cause the front panel not to come on? Any guidance on what to look
for and where to look would be appreciated.

Thanks
