Okay, but do they provide the tool(s) needed to do that purge?  Do they even
indicate that such purge is needed periodically?  I worked for a software
firm years ago that had similar issues (deleted records, not members), but
we provided the tools to cut down the file size, pointed it out in client
training, but left it to them for scheduling.

Sounds like one of the GT files from Gentran.

I have to manually purge them once a week at one of my clients.

Why not just archive and remove them as they are used?  I realize
that, since it's a package, it's probably not possible to modify the
package per se, but many vendors provide hooks for user apps.

Alternatively, could you change the file to *NoMax and clean it up as
part of a nightly save or some such maintenance cycle?

Is there a field in the INFDS to tell me how many members are in a
file?  If not, is there something else I can do to quickly return the
count?

The reason I'm asking is that we have an EDI file that fills up to max
members every so often (3rd party package), and things go south real
quick when that happens.  I'd like to write a monitor that will report
when the file is nearing capacity, giving us a chance to archive and
cleanup before we run into issues.
