I've used RTVMSG to build formatted strings with parameters in a similiar
situation ( QRYSLT parameter of the OPNQRYF command, before I moved to
embedded SQL). It would be easier to do now if you can declare a data
structure in CL using *DEFINED variables

Basic idea is to define the SQL statement as second level text with
parameters, define a CL data structure variable to match the message
parameters, populate the data structure, and then then let the magic happen
with this command:

RTVMSG MSGID(yourmsgid) MSGF(yourmsgf) MSGDTA(&CLparameterDS)
SECLVL(&SQLcommand)

Then pass &SQLcommand to DOCSQL. I typically send the retrieved string as a
diagnostic message to *EXT for review.
