Valid point about the younger guy leaving. I mean, I was only there for
5 years. But they are hoping to have people there longer, each of the
ones still there are all 10+. And, most of the older guys in our area
do not have extensive ILE skills. Most just never embraced it for lack
of time, or caring.

That's what I like - age discrimination.
What gets my goat is, how does the company know that the younger
programmer will not just up and leave in the same time period, 2 to 5
years.

This is extremely true. The job I took at the start of the year is to
replace an RPG'er who is retiring. I'm 28, with 5 years experience, all
independent on the job learning. I was up against guys with many more
DECADES of experience. But why did I get the job? Because they wanted
someone who had a broader range of knowledge and would come in and not
be afraid to shake things up. They also didn't want to do this all
again in 5-7 years. As true as it is sometimes, companies (people in
them) generally don't like change. But they do like having people that
they believe are best suited for it.
On that note, I do know of a job in Muncy, PA that needs someone who
knows RPGLE, free-format, service programs and modules. Some web
experience would also be beneficial. If you plan on working for more
than 5 more years let me know and I'll introduce you. There are jobs
out there, but companies don't want to replace a retiring programmer
with someone who is going to be retiring again in 5 or 7 years.
Especially smaller companies that are privately owned with programming
staffs of 2 - 5.

I once read someone ask if someone had 20 years of experience, or, did
they have 1 year of experience, repeated 20 times? You can compare this
to someone who has moved from RPGIII to ILE including free format,
subprocedures, service programs. And also has extensive experience with
SQL. Has some knowledge of HTML, CSS etc. Interfaced RPG with Java to
take advantage of things like updating Excel. Has extensive use of RDP.
Worked with EDI. Has upgraded OS numerous times, kept up with PTF's.
Has attended numerous conferences, volunteered, and spoken.
Now, compare that with someone who has worked on the same A/R package
all that time. Written and kept in RPGIII. Barely knows most of the
function keys in SEU. Rushes home to catch the rerun of Beverly
Hillbillies.
Who has 20 years of experience and who has 1 year of experience repeated
20 times?
Companies look for a broad, but in depth, background of the first
person.

But this remains the weirdest market I have ever seen. There is nobody
available but there are no jobs. You would think if there were a storage
of
programmers you would have a lot of companies looking or vis versa. A
lot of programmers would mean no jobs. Instead there is a storage of
programmers but still no jobs available.
We have companies here looking for months and into years but you almost
never see jobs.
