found a way in which the message *could* get polluted in the process of
generating it.
It doesn't rule out pollution being introduced in an intermediate stage,
but it does mean that I was mistaken about the original message being
guaranteed canonical where unpaired CRs or LFs are concerned.
And it gives me something to investigate further.
