I can't speak to the process that was used to upgrade from old hardware to
new hardware in early 2005, I wasn't here at that time. I know that a IBM
business partner did the upgrade. When we upgraded the 2005 hardware (a
520) to new hardware in late 2008 (M15) we did upgrade the 520 to V5R4
(from V5R3) prior to moving to the M15 (which was at V5R4). We then
performed a save of all user data (Save menu option 23) and then restored
it on the M15 (at the direction of our IBM business partner). None of the
0001 type files date from that time, all are 2005 or earlier.

Thanks for all the info on this issue. I'm reviewing it all and pondering a
way forward.

Here's one where some guy named Chuck, if given access to your system,
offered to fix them at no cost.

A suspicion is that, at some time in the past, an upgrade was performed
that was done 'out of the ordinary'. IOW, instead of upgrading the old
machine to a recent OS and then putting that on the new machine as a
scratch install they restored a few things from the old to the new and
then tried to fix a few things to get it up to the new release.
