The logic of the MMC is not as you are thinking it is.

When you have a DASD Drawer (FC #5886 Large form factor SAS or FC #5887 Small form factor SAS for example.) you pay a flat monthly maintenance fee for that drawer. If you have 1 140GB Drive in it you pay that price. If you have 24 283GB Drives in it you pay the same price. So clearly IBM has 'done the math' and figured out the average number of drives in the drawers out there and which type. Then they averaged the cost of the drives and came up with a MMC for the drawer. SO far all is well. Beauty for the customer is you can go from 12 to 18 drives in there with NO change in MMC. You can also go from 140 to 280 or 450 GB drives (higher price) and no issue.

Then along came the SSD and they are off the curve price wise - SIGNIFICANTLY higher. IBM Had two choices: 1) Raise the MMC for the drawer to compensate and thus subsidize the maintenance of SSDs by those NOT using SSDs or 2) Charge a MMC for the SSDs to compensate for their higher price. IBM Has cost for repair parts too and they must get their money one way or the other.

So you see the MMC for the SSDs is not due to increased failures but due to their significantly higher cost.

Let's see them put their money where their mouth is and remove the MMC
