I am having a heck of a time getting my head around sharing the DVD drive in
the CEC. VIOS is the Base OS ( Host ) and I will have at least '5' IBM i
Guests. I want to be able to use the SDMC to move the DVD that is in the CPU
Chassis between VIOS, and the Guest Partitions/LPARs ( now called Virtual
Machines in the SDMC ). My concept is simply Vary Off the DVD in partition
A, move the DVD to partition B and vary it on. Since the DVD is on the same
controller as the disks I can't move the controller, so I must virtualize
the DVD. So far The VIOS support person can tell me how to move it with
VIOS, but because of the varied experience levels that will help run the
box, I wnat to use the SDMC.
IBM just says create more Virtual Adapters... OK I can create up to 1012 per
machine, that in itself doesn't help. I ASS-U-ME I must tag/mark/point these
adapters to this DVD. So with 5 IBM i guests, do I need 5 separate virtual
adapters in VIOS each pointing to a different guest machine/partition? If so
can I just point all of the VIOS adapters at the same DVD resource in VIOS
or Do I need to create 5 virtual DVDs in VIOS? So far most of the docs I
can find ref the HMC and not SDMC. While the SDMC is the follow on
replacement for the HMC, it does something differently...
I have a Headache
Next on to the Shared Ethernet Adapter (SEA)
Thanks for any input in advance.
