I've got an article coming out shortly at MCPress that details writing a simple UDF to extract data from an alpha field. I wrote it to help with handling DSPJRN output files, but it works on any flat files.

this is a really good idea. I have a lot of flat files which contain
multiple records in the files. An item on the todo list is to use sql
functions to first identify each record type. And then extract the
packed data stored in the single data field of the flat file.
