Pure bullshit.
Power is the hardware. I wish I could share with everyone how much revenue that IBM I contributes to Power. Suffice it to say, IBM i is adding money not just to Power, but to the entire IBM corporation. IBM I has been extremely profitable, and the revenue generated from IBM I is noticed within the entire Power organization, if not the entire IBM organization. For those of us who run IBM I, there are future plans going out many many years (sorry, I can't get into details), do not believe the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) that AIX is the only operating system that IBM cares about (or that the Power people care about). Is AIX important to IBM, you bet it is. Is IBM I important to IBM, you bet it is. If IBM I wasn't in the picture, the Earning per Share of IBM stock would be affected.
It annoys me to no end when people try to spread the FUD around, that IBM only cares about AIX. Yes, IBM has screwed up the marketing of the naming of IBM I (the old OS/400), but you can cry about it just like you can cry about the new layout of Facebook.
For those people who have nothing good to say about IBM I, I say leave the platform and see if you can find something 1/2 as good. For those remaining, this is your community. This is your livelihood. Make constructive criticism. Don't argue about what could have been, should have been, and names. If you want something there are avenues to get enhancements, new features, etc. I know the COMMON CAAC & the Large User Group have put forth quite a lot of requirements for i5/OS at the time, and something like over 65% have made it into IBM i. This is due to the fact that Steve Will and his team are listening and working with our community. They have done a great job determining which features and functions provide the most value, and putting those into the various releases. Do we get everything, no, but we sure got some great stuff in these last few releases.
If I have hurt anyone's feelings, that wasn't the intension. Don, you were the straw that broke the camel's back. If all we concentrate on is the negative, then when people outside of IBM I Google on these discussions, they are going to feel and believe that the machine is not moving forward, when that isn't the case. Promote the platform that you work on, tell others how good the machine is, don't just tell each other on this list, go out and tell people about Watson, and that is the same platform that you run your business on. Is it the same OS, NO, but it is the exact same Power platform.

The things that you're as WELL AWARE of as many of the rest of us include:
1. This o/s is known (thanks to IBM ineptness) by many names, and these names are ACCEPTED BY INDUSTRY when talking about the broad category of systems that run OS/400, uh, I mean i/os, un, I mean..... All of us (with one or 2 exceptions) generally seem to understand what the others are talking about.
2. Also as I believe you're well aware of, when IBM says "POWER" they're specifically referring and wanting you to be running AIX. To IBM, os/400(or
whatever) is and has been just another add on legacy (THEIR TERMS) o/s.
Keep in mind that AIX, is just another mutation of UNIX - BOTH operating environments which have been around for as long or longer than CPF or OS/400
- yet for some reason IBM hasn't decided to morph their names along with the
seasons... Ever wonder why?
